OK , so i have installed Win7 on a low-end laptop (1ghz atom cpu, 2gb Ram) which is a similar specs available at Win7 release , and since many many people claimed that Win10 is crappy compared to Win7 ; let me compared Win7 to Win10 ... i will even use Win7 Ultimate vs Win10 Home

this will be a real-time comparison made like Average Joe would.

please don't mention about privacy , it is not the purpose here.

Installation
(Win10 win)

both OS are in the latest ISO from USB using Rufus

Win7 : the installation was properly made, nothing special there
Win10: same as Win7, did customized setting , etc...

Then there the first expected fail of Win7 ; it doesn't have the proper drivers for my machine; which was released for Win8. So basically i ended up with no network, so i can't have Windows Updates...
I was expected it so i have them downloaded prior to the installation, but Average Joe won't think of it and if he doesn't have another PC under hands, he is done...

Post Installation (no winner)

Win7:
user account creation is classic , nothing to complain here.
Win10: MS push you to use a MS account for various purposes, but a local account is permitted ; so here nothing to complain too.

Windows Updates (Win10 win)

when i install an OS , the first thing i do is Windows Update to get latest compatible drivers and security fixes.

Win7:
Windows update hang and download nothing, if i didn't have a network traffic monitoring tool i could wait for hours. so i started wasting my time looking for fixes and finally find one here Windows 7 - Windows Updates hanging and not downloading?
Win10: clicked "check updates, after less than a minute , all are displayed, downloaded , installed without issues. I heard that some users had problems with it and some updates smashed their system, but i did dozen of Win10 installs and never get one.
If you worry, you can force Win10 to download only fixes and not drivers. ( PC > Hardware > Device Installation Settings)

Installation of updates in Win10 is smoother and less subject to errors/crash , not saying than on Win7 the display of the updates is very bad , you don't know if it is installing or hanging...

Post installation Cleaning/Tweaking/Backup (Not for Average Joe) (Win7 win)

After updating the OS, i always clean it and do various tweaks and modifications to make it "faster" , safer, and easier to use. Among those tweaks are services customization, security tweaks via registry/group policies, etc...Then finish by a backup using Windows Backup.

Win7: all options are in the same place (control panel ), they are easy to get.
Win10: i dont know why they decided to split the settings in 2 places , it make it harder to do since you have to navigate in "Settings" which may redirect to Control Panel...

In term of customization and control Win7 is better than Win10, (Win10 removing many of the control you had in Win7).
It is the main reason why Geeks and other advanced users stick to Win7.
For the backup no difference because Win10 uses Win7 system :D

I will post my Customized Win7 theme, im sure you will love it ;)
there the screenshot : Desktops Show Off!

Built-in Security (Win10 win)

when the OS is totally installed, cleaned, tweaked, it is time to check the security.

Win7: unless you have a version of Win7 with Applocker, Win7 barely give you anything to protect yourself, you must look for a 3rd party application.
Win10: MS did its best to give to the customers a secure OS , so many security implementations were made (kernel enhanced protection, secureboot, integrated AV, system wide reputation feature, new integrity level, etc...) , as a common user , you barely need anything else; security geeks however... ;)

3rd Party security softs (Win7 Win)

Now that we knows the security features of the OS, it is up to the user to add its favored security soft.

Win7: All the actual security softs works on Win7 , so there is no problem.
Win10: due to some restrictive adjustments made to the kernel, some softs can't run anymore on Win10 and some can't use or lost some of their features/protection (KIS, Webroot, Zemana, etc...).

Performance (Win10 win)

now all is set , we can start enjoy the OS...as i said earlier , both OS were tested on a machine with the technology available at their release. There is no point on comparing a new OS on a machine made to run on a older OS. the older OS will always perform better.

Win7: Quite fast and if you disable Aero and sounds, Win7 is even faster.
Win10: Win7 has a huge advantage on Win7 , it is the Hybrid Boot (aka Fast Boot) that really increase the boot time of the machine. However Win10 has many feature that eat resources and honesty not really needed and those can be disabled (as you can do for Win7)

Usability (Win7 win)

What is important is usability, you won't spend too much time looking for something.
This comparison was made on laptops not a tablets , so i judged it accordingly.

Win7: all is at the same place, easily accessible.
Win10: Win8/10 were made for tablet first (and desktop after) , so the usability is quite different.

Luckily MS improved the desktop experience of Win 10 with the lastest Anniversaty Update. but in a overall point of view ,Win7 is better on desktop/laptop machines.

Conclusion:

the Winner is Win10 because its security and core enhancements and optimization, however Win7 keep the leadership in term of customization/control and usability.

Ok so it is finish now, so you are welcome to comment; i tried to do this comparison as fair as possible for both OS.

Exact many fans of Win7 and haters of Win10 are geeks , because they can use tweaks, Applocker, GP on Win7 where they can't anymore on Win10 ; they just forgot that Average Joe doesn't care of those tweaks; Average Joe want a shiny, Apps filled and easy to use OS.

I use Windows 10 nearly similar to Windows 7. e.g. I don't like the new settings menu. Instead, I use the typical Control Panel as known from Windows XP/Vista/7. Also I uninstalled/disabled everything that had to do with apps/appstore. But all in all Windows 10 is running a bit lighter and faster, especially on boot and virus-scanning. That's why I'm using Windows 10. It also has a bit more security improvement compared to Windows 7.

Windows 10 is the clear winner for me. All these so called "privacy" issues mean nothing more than automated analysis of some data for statistical purposes and for showing you better ads (which by the way i don't see thanks to UBlock Origin). No worries except if you do something illegal and/or you are a terrorist. Noone is manually looking at your nude pics, don't worry. :p Windows 10 has much more security features, is built from the ground up with security in mind, is continuously updated and has a much larger community of beta testers (insiders). Supported for the lifetime of your device. The new browser is going to be one of the two best overall browsers in the world IMO along with Chrome. And it is going to be more secure than it. Cortana is almost useless for me for now but digital assistants are the future and she is evolving. Let's hope that in Redstone 2 the priority will be mobile so Windows 10 can become a good ecosystem.

win 10 clearly , it's faster and way more secure! the only downside upgrades to a newer build will replace the factory recovery console on your hdd / sdd that is really annoying aspect on win10. but luckily for us all , the media creation tool comes to the rescue for that :D

Forgot to tell about the resources. It doesn't seem to be lighter than Windows 7 but the same. In any case it's not slower than 7.

Let's compare everything on low-end PCs, if we compare them on high-end PCs, differences are hard to find
W7 > W10:
- faster boot time when w10's "fast startup" is disabled, noticeable. If w10 doesn't have fast startup, no way I will use it
- less pagefile usage, better memory management => less disk I/O activity => better HDD/SSD lifespan. W10 pushes memory into pagefile a lot which degrades my HDD, I don't like it
- instant response after clicking something. Believe it or not, my 1gb laptop with core2duo on w7 runs smoother (not faster) than my i7, GT650M, 8gb ram on w10. I tweaked both my laptops a lot
- much more reliable if I do something wrong
- my gf's laptop (i5, GT630M, 4gb ram, HDD) runs w7 perfectly. When her laptop was erased by the repair guy, installed w10 for her but it has 100% disk activity problem. I have tried 19 different solutions but it just gets a bit better but never fixed. There is 1 more solution that I haven't got a chance to try yet as I won't sit in front of her laptop a 1 month. W7 die-hard users would say "What the heck is that?" :D. If that solution doesn't work I have to reinstall w7 since 100% disk activity makes the laptop run like a 2gb & core2duo laptop
I dont have that problem in my W10 laptop. Please don't say the solution is SSD. It's correct as the easiest solution but ridiculous
- better for avarage users who don't wanna deal without problems as w7 has been working well for them a long time. I think w10 is more buggy compared to w7

W10 > w7:
- security
- fast startup
- drivers
- maybe faster on high-end PCs without tweaking but if we use some advanced tweaks, I don't think it can beat w7
- ...

correct me if I'm wrong

This is your real world experience so i can't deny that or say that you are "wrong", i just can say that everyone's experience is different. I can share that the only thing that runs slower here is the start menu, and that's why i use Classic Shell's start menu.

Let's compare everything on low-end PCs, if we compare them on high-end PCs, differences are hard to find

That is the first mistake ; you must compare them with hardware commonly used at their release.

Win7 on my low-end PC (atom 1ghz, 2gb ram), low-end today , but if this machine was released in the Win7 era, it would be a mid end machine.
Win10 on an i5 (2.6ghz) with 6Gb ram is mostly an average end machine too.

so i think my comparison is fair enough.

Finally Win7 is finally updated took 1 day lol ; so i continue my comparison in the OP.

I really like Windows 7, as with any other after install I would tweak it to my liking and it worked much better than out of the box. Even Vista I got on my notebook worked OK.

Same thing is now with Windows 10, I really like it. procedure is install, tweak, profit. On machines I installed win10 it was mostly better than win7 except for some older lowend Acer notebooks. Problem with win10 (if we ignore privacy) is finding drivers if you have older hardware.

People should realize that Windows 10 is already at the stage where the OS has highly crafted.

Security, customization and performance engaged to make the OS well stable.

-------------------------------

As usual, many users don't want to use that OS because of piracy strict implementation, so they will go to Windows 7 instead.

I updated my Desktop (dual core Pentium@3.1 Ghz with SSD) and my wife's laptop (dual core Pentium@2.0 with Hybrid HD). My Desktop runs very well with W10AU, but the laptop seemed to struggle a bit. After a few restarts, the cache of the hybrid kicked in and boot time reduced.

My wife also has a laptop for her work which runs Windows 7. When I told her laptop had updated, so some things might look different, she asked me whether it was possible to put Windows 7 back on her own laptop, so look and feel of the two are the same.

After the downgrade my wife told me that the laptop felt snappier, but measuring boot time and program launch (with AppTimer), the differences are minimal (in favour of Windows 7). These small differences could also be caused by network traffic of neighbouring wireless networks.

So at our home it is a draw Windows 7 vs Windows 10 = 1 : 1

When i was an avid win7 fan i did a clean install then used macrium and did a image backup!
It took almost a day to install updates.
So glad win10 is a breeze to install.

I prefer Windows 10 over Windows 7 now that I'm used to it. The fact that I can use Ctrl functions (shortcuts) in the command prompt is a big plus, it's also smooth, takes less resources than Windows 7 with Aero (Aero is nice, but it can be a real drag) and I don't mind the new Settings menu, even though I still use the Control Panel by reflex.
