I was lucky enough to outright, from the first attempt, get the new Avastified Norton 360, known as version 24.60

The new Norton for Mac is incredible experience.

The interface is very fresh, bold, smooth, animated and is lighting years ahead of what Norton was offering so far. That's not to say that the previous UX was bad, but the new experience feels much more modern and less corporate, serious, boring and all other "superlatives" that were easy to apply till now.

Security-wise it combines Norton's super light IPS for Mac (consisting of few attack signatures, not to be confused with the Windows one maintained by Symantec), as well as Avast Remote Desktop Protection. Settings are what we've come to expect from Avast-powered product.

Instead of displaying notifications for every event, it can provide weekly summary - feature I absolutely love the sound of.

Smart firewall is available, so I am able to control and monitor my internet traffic. It has been developed for the Norton products and is not available in Avast.

Under Browser Protection, we've got the typical Avast Web Shield, which seems to have been combined with the Norton extension. It now takes care of HTTPS connections, as well as checks downloads instantly (most probably against Avast's massive database). Some websites are blocked by Norton SafeWeb, others by web shield, third by both. For those who don't know, SafeWeb is a Norton Patent and never belonged to Symantec. No idea why content is not fed to the Avast system.

Under performance, CCleaner-powered, Avast-enabled experience exists, that allows deep Junk cleanup (partially useful), as well as startup manager which can also be found in Mac's native settings panel. Nevertheless, novice users may benefit from these features.

Under Privacy, VNP is available, which includes Gen Digital's newly patented Mimic Protocol.

The Avast definitions set is full, covers malware for all platforms, including Windows and is 325.4MB currently. Streaming definitions are delivered as well. The app (package size only) is 237.2 MB. CPU and GPU usage seem to be the absolute minimal, not exceeding 0.4-5% most of the time, scan times are very short, memory usage is about 300MB.

That's great to hear! It seems like the new Norton for Mac is really stepping up its game in terms of malware protection and system resource usage. The minimal CPU and GPU usage, along with short scan times, are certainly impressive. Thanks for sharing your experience and the image.

It also natively supports the M family of SoCs.

@Trident, for clarification for me, is the new Avastified Norton 360 v24.60 for macOS generally available, or you got special access? My wife's iMac might benefit from this...
PS since you also like ZA anti-ransomware for mac (beta) which of these 2 do you suggest. What's your position regarding default macOS, no 3d-party av?

Just got it from my account, but other people are getting the old one. Norton is releasing the 24 version in a phased manner so it depends on luck.

Very hard to compare the two. Norton has features such as Firewall, VPN and Cleanup, ZoneAlarm offers powerful behavioural blocking. Under Symantec era, behavioural blocking on Mac used to exist, but Avast hasn’t got an equivalent and looking at their patents, nothing has been granted recently.

ZoneAlarm would outperform Avast and Norton on web blocking and phishing detection.
I guess it’s more a matter of personal taste.

Lack of security software shouldn’t be an issue for majority of Mac users, specially those who don’t engage in surfing risky sites, and downloading apps from all over the web.

Thanks for the info. Will this be available in Windows versions? Or is this not known?

Does Norton 360 for Mac v24.x query the cloud or only local stored defs?

Does Norton 360 for Windows v24.x query the cloud or only local stored defs?
afaik...Norton 360 for Windows v22.x queries the cloud and only a small sub-set of prevalent defs is stored local.

Its Avast in a Norton skin.....
Okay....same question:
Does Avast in a Norton skin aka Norton 360 for Mac v24.x query the cloud or only local stored defs?

Norton 360 for Windows v22.x (afaik) queries the cloud with a sub-set of prevalent defs stored locally.
I'm long time Norton 360 for Windows. I've not touched Norton v24.x nor Avast v24.x
So, I'm curious whether Norton (Avast in a Norton skin) v24.x retains heavy lifting in the cloud like Norton 360 for Windows v22.x?

To answer the questions, yeah. Same Norton is coming to Windows. There will be no IPS.

It does query the cloud to confirm safety, though the large set of definitions (Avast recently got a patent on clustering and reducing them) provide very high detection even offline.

Also, Web Shield is filly cloud-based.

And when will it arrive? Is it possible to know?

I wish they would release version updates in various phases instead of using an indefinite timeframe where it is not clear who can get the new version and when, just like malwerebytes did last time.

AV-Comparatives Malware Protection test result is always a good source to get an idea regarding this question:

Did I read that right, there will be no IPS of the windows version? The ability to drop/block malicious packets and connections is a large part of what makes Norton great.

I'm running my Norton_VM today, it is updated current with version 22.24.5.6. What is the version number for the new feature version & do we know when is it coming. Is there a link to read to about this? or do you glean from another forum postings...
