What is it?

The 2021 epic science fiction movie Dune: Part One.

Dune Official Trailer:

Dune (2021) Review | Spicy Worms Edition™ | Smack Talk:

Here is how Wikipedia describes this movie:

Dune (titled onscreen as Dune: Part One) is a 2021 American epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth.

It is the first of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name from Frank Herbert‘s Dune franchise.

Set in the far distant future, the film follows Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis.

The ensemble cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, and David Dastmalchian.

My Thoughts

I was hoping that someone would make a proper Dune movie one day.

I was hoping that someone would finish making movies and / or miniseries and / or TV shows for the rest of the Dune books by Frank Herbert.

So this movie was my most anticipated movie of 2020 & 2021.

I have read all six Dune books by Frank Herbert & most of the Dune Encyclopedia.

I have seen all the Syfy channel Dune TV miniseries, Frank Herbert’s Dune & Frank Herbert’s Children Of Dune, and I have seen the 1984 movie Dune.

The Frank Herbert’s Children Of Dune TV miniseries was my favorite of these.

My brother GC & I watched this movie at home, it would have been better to watch it in a movie theater, and I still might do that one day.

I watched this movie twice, I was somewhat disappointed the first time because I was too busy trying to compare it to the books & miniseries et cetera.

It started more boring that time, and the movie skipped some important details / lore & characters & locations et cetera.

The music was not as good as I had expected, and some characters did not have as much life / personality & dialogue as expected & seemed more flat.

The locations were too empty.

I did not like most of the armor, except for the Harkonnen armor, and I would have liked the Sardaukar armor if the color & fit was different.

I did not like the headpieces that the Bene Gesserit wore, they probably should not even have that.

Especially nothing that tall & that stands out that much.

The movie ended too soon / abruptly if this is meant to be part one of two movies.

To me, this movie seemed to only cover about 25% of the book, which would leave a lot that needs to be covered in the next movie.

I enjoyed this movie more the second time that I watched it.

That time I just focused on enjoying it as a movie, instead of constantly comparing it to the books & miniseries et cetera.

This time it felt less boring & better paced & I was able to enjoy Denis’s vision for this movie better.

It still had some other flaws, though, but this movie looks good visually & it is serious.

I imagine that I will like it even more if I see it in a movie theater.

I wish that this movie would have been longer & that they would have added a few more lines of dialogue to quickly explain various things that they skipped.

I wish that they would have shown more characters & locations, and that they would have put more characters in those locations.

Also, I wish that some of the characters would have gotten to show more personality, and that the other flaws that I mentioned were not there.

This will likely end up being the best film version of the first Dune book if they finish the story in the next movie or movies.

I think that the Dune books work better in a miniseries or TV show format.

They can work in movie format if you make them longer than part one of this movie was.

This movie was not as good as I had hoped, it suffers from some of the flaws of Denis, who loves the more sterile slow burn approach to movie making.

Some of his style works for this movie, but he needs someone to help tame his style a bit to make his movies more mainstream.

He made a few changes from the Dune book that I did not like, like sex / gender swapping Liet Kynes (Liet-Kynes) & not having the character Chani be the daughter of Liet Kynes.

I was also disappointed by some of the fight choreography, especially some of the group battles, and you did not get to see enough of the action.

I would probably rate this a 6 – 7 out of 10, I predict it will be an 8 out of 10 if you watch it in a movie theater.

I recommend watching it, but do not watch it when you are tired and / or distracted and / or bored.

Furthermore, I will wait until the next movie or so to start trying to figure out if it is better than both of the miniseries or not.

What Is It?

The 2023 Netflix American apocalyptic psychological thriller movie Leave The World Behind.

Leave The World Behind | Official Teaser | Netflix:

Leave the World Behind (2023) Netflix Movie Review:

This is how Netflix describes this movie:

A family’s getaway to a luxurious rental home takes an ominous turn when a cyberattack knocks out their devices — and two strangers appear at their door.
Starring: Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke

My Thoughts

This movie was better than I expected, and it kept my attention.

The mystery kept me wondering what was going on.

I also liked the undertone of racial, ethnic, class, family, societal, et cetera issues.

To me, this movie had a lot of hidden symbolism in it, which I liked, and has me trying to figure out some possible meanings.

It definitely makes you think about what you can do to try to survive a similar situation.

I would rate this movie a 3.5 – 4 out of 5, and I wish that we would have learned more.

What Is It?

The 2010 animated comic short film Inception: The Cobol Job.

Trailer:

Inception: The Cobol Job Reel:

Video Clip:

INCEPTION : The Cobol Engineering Job:

This is how Fandom describes this animated comic short film:

Inception: The Cobol Job is a prologue to Inception: The Big Under, and thus to Inception as well. Written by Jordan Goldberg, the comic was illustrated by Long Vo, Joe Ng, and Crystal Reid of Udon.
The comic was originally published online on the Inception official website and at Yahoo! Movies, but has since been taken down.
It details the heist on Mr. Kaneda‘s mind by Nash, Cobb, Arthur, and several Cobol Engineering thugs.
The dream world takes the shape of a downtown area complete with skyscrapers, a bank, and an office building.

My Thoughts

Inception is one of my favorite movies of all time, I have seen reviews, analysis videos, scenes, parodies, et cetera about Inception, but had never heard of this animated comic / comic before.

It was not until I happened to find it by accident on an online streaming video website recently in early January 2024, which is a shame, it is also a shame that this has no voice acting.

They should release this & new parts of this with voice acting.

I am glad that I found this and finally got to see this after all these years.

It gives you an idea of some events before the Inception movie.

FLITE | Hyper Realistic CG Sci-Fi Short Using Unreal Engine by Short Of The Week:

Description:

Using state-of-the-art virtual production techniques comes one of the most technically impressive sci-fi shorts of recent memory. From Oscar-winner Tim Webber of Framestore and starring Alba Baptista comes FLITE.

In London 2053, a world champion hoverboarder finds herself imprisoned in a luxury skyscraper apartment by her controlling manager. With the help of a well-meaning stranger she engineers an ingenious high-rise escape but soon finds herself riding for her life.

A selection of Short of the Week, the web's leading curators of quality short films.

"FLITE is a film I’ve been eagerly awaiting for much of 2023. Rare is it that a short film trailer drop feels like an event, but, back in May, FLITE got that treatment from the Hollywood Reporter, and in-depth writeups in specialized industry publications soon followed. This is not the norm, but not every short film can claim an Oscar-winning VFX Supervisor as its director, someone whose fingerprints are all over several of the most beloved and acclaimed films of the 21st century.

Tim Webber is that director, and also the Chief Technology Officer of the VFX powerhouse Framestore. The former Oxford Physics student has pioneered some of the approaches we now bundle under the umbrella of “virtual production” in his career, perhaps most notably on the 2013 Alfonso Cuarón film Gravity, and now applies that expertise to his own turn in the director’s chair" - S/W Curator, Jason Sondhi

The 2019 action comedy movie Guns Akimbo.

Guns Akimbo – Official Trailer:

My Thoughts

I found out about this movie by accident when I saw the thumbnail for it on an online streaming video website.

If it were not for that, I would not have known about this movie because no one that I am subscribed to has even mentioned this movie.

I watched the trailer for this movie, and it looked like an over-the-top crazy unique goofy comedy action movie.

To my surprise, it looked like something that I would either like or at least have fun watching.

My brother GC and I watched it, I enjoyed this movie even more than I had expected.

It is probably my favorite movie that I have seen this year, 2020, so far, to my surprise, well in the beginning-to-middle of the movie, at least.

This movie was goofy, colorful, action-packed, over-the-top, crazy, fun, was filmed better than expected.

The choreography was better than expected, it reminded me of a combination of several other movies, like Hardcore Henry combined with Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

I was really liking this movie in the beginning, favorite of the year so far.

But it started to slow down & get a bit too goofy & too unbelievable, while missing some details from the middle to the end of it.

Some unexpected things did happen during this movie though that I liked.

I liked Samara Weaving’s performance as the character Nix, and the action was pretty good.

I did not like the middle to the end of the movie as much, which brought down my score for this movie.

It was still a fun watch, but it would be better if they had shortened the movie a bit & gave it some more details while being a bit more logical at times.

What is it?

The 2015 Japanese anime (animated) science fiction action spy thriller movie Ghost In The Shell: The New Movie (Ghost In The Shell: Arise − The Movie).

Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie – Theatrical Trailer:

This is how Metacritic describes this anime movie:

With all of humanity linked into one system of minds and personalities known as ghosts, the biggest threat to civilization is the cyberterrorists capable of hijacking people’s bodies and memories.
When a ghost-infecting virus known as Fire-Starter begins spreading through the system, resulting in the assassination of the Japanese Prime Minister, Major Motoko Kusanagi and her elite team of special operatives are called in to track down its source.
As they delve deeper and deeper into their investigation, they uncover traces of government corruption and a shadowy broker that bears an all-too-familiar face.
When your target can be anywhere and look like anyone, the only choice you have is to trust your ghost, and hope you aren’t infected too.
Directed By: Motonobu Hori, Shinji Itadaki, Kazuchika Kise, Toshiyuki Kôno, Kazuya Nomura
Written By: Shirow Masamune, Clint Bickham, Tow Ubukata

My Thoughts

I first learned about this movie thanks to Chris Stuckmann’s review of this movie called Ghost In The Shell: The New Movie – Movie Review:

If it was / were not for Chris Stuckmann, I possibly would have never known about this movie or the new short television show Ghost In The Shell: Arise that it was based on, so thank you, Chris Stuckmann.

My brother GC and I watched the short anime (animated) television show first, and then we watched the anime (animated) movie at the very end of 2015.

The show and the movie blur together to me, so I have difficulty differentiating the two.

I do remember that this movie is more action focused compared to the other Ghost In The Shell anime movies.

I do remember that I probably liked the first Ghost In The Shell anime movie better than this.

Furthermore, I possibly liked this better than Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex – Solid State Society, which is possibly the worst of the Ghost In The Shell animated movies in my opinion, but I could be wrong because it has been awhile since I saw it.

I like the trailer for this movie better than the movie itself, it is not a bad movie though, and I liked it better than Chris Stuckmann did.

I think that they did an okay job trying to bring Ghost In The Shell to a new audience.

Even though I wish that they could have combined the best elements of the Ghost In The Shell anime movies with the best elements of the Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex television shows.

I think that Mary Elizabeth McGlynn should have still been the voice for Motoko Kusanagi.

"A reclusive author who writes espionage novels about a secret agent and a global spy syndicate realizes the plot of the new book she's writing starts to mirror real-world events, in real time."
If you have nothing better to do and want to kill some time... Not bad, just not that good IMO. I went to the theater for the popcorn. (& Dua Lipa has small role at the beginning of the film)

PS -- I did see Poor Things a couple of weeks ago. Interesting story, good actors, winning awards.

What Is It?

The 2023 American science fiction movie Divinity:

Divinity | Official Trailer | Utopia:

Divinity (2023) – Movie Review | BIZARRE Sci-Fi Horror:

My Thoughts

I had higher hopes for this movie, unfortunately, it did not live up to it.

It had the style, it had the potential, but it wasted it by: not properly explaining the world enough, unnecessary nudity & sex, some bad & out-of-place stop-motion, and a rushed mindless action ending.

The house where most of this movie took place was cool & unique, the black & white set a mood, and the technology in this movie combined old & new.

This is definitely an art house movie that feels like a combination of Incubus (1966), Frankenstein, and an almost softcore porn movie wrapped in weirdness.

I would rate this movie a 2.5 – 3 out of 5.
