Security tip
Change one thing at a time. When troubleshooting, record each change and test the result before making another. Keep a way to undo it so the investigation does not create a second problem.
Add control over app launches. On supported Windows 11 devices, review Smart App Control in Windows Security. It can add an app-trust check alongside your antivirus.
VirusTotal is a starting point. Read detection names, scan dates, and file details on VirusTotal. Treat the engine count as one piece of evidence when deciding what to investigate next.
Have a recovery plan. Before a major system change, back up important files and check which Windows recovery option fits the problem. Some reset and reinstall choices remove apps or data.
Know what enhanced checks share. Chrome's Enhanced protection sends additional browsing and security information to Google. Read the setting's explanation and choose the protection level that fits your privacy preferences.
Private browsing has a scope. Incognito helps limit browsing traces stored in that browser session. Websites and network operators may still observe activity, so use it with realistic expectations.
Check hidden mail forwarding. After an email-account compromise, review forwarding rules and filters. An attacker may use them to keep receiving messages after you change the password.
Encrypt portable backups. Protect portable backup drives with encryption and store the recovery information separately. This helps keep a lost drive from becoming a data leak.
Review account access too. Malware cleanup is only part of recovery if account details were exposed. From a trusted device, review account activity and revoke unfamiliar access.
Tighten permissions you do not need. Review camera, microphone, and location permissions in Settings. Keep access appropriate to the feature you actually use rather than approving everything at installation.
Use a separate account. Give other people their own account when sharing a Mac. Separate accounts help keep personal files and settings from mixing during everyday use.
End support access cleanly. After a remote-support session, check whether unattended access remains enabled. Remove or disable access that was intended to be temporary.
Make screenshots useful. Capture the full warning and the relevant setting, with personal details hidden. A cropped fragment can remove the information another member needs to help.
Give blocked apps a proper review. If Smart App Control blocks a legitimate app, check for a current signed release from its developer. Treat disabling protection as a significant trade-off.
Check the existing file report. If you have a file's hash, look for its existing VirusTotal report before uploading it. This can provide useful context without sending the file itself.
Keep recovery media reachable. Prepare recovery media before you need it and store it safely. A recovery drive and a backup of your personal files serve different purposes.
Compare file hashes. When discussing a suspicious file, include its SHA-256 hash and source. Matching filenames alone cannot establish that two people downloaded the same file.
Downloads survive private browsing. Files you download can remain on the device after closing an Incognito window. Check what you saved before leaving a shared computer.
Fix password reuse at the source. If you reused a compromised password on other accounts, change those passwords too. Give each account a unique password to limit the impact of a breach.
Check the oldest useful copy. Review how far back your backups go. A problem discovered late may require a version from before the most recent few backups.
